WEBSITE FIELD NOTES / 3 MIN READ

The future of websites

What role could your website play in achieving your next business goal?

Your next website could help you prepare for a sales conversation before you have even met the customer. It could gather the information your team needs, guide someone towards a suitable service or help an existing client take the next step. Those possibilities should influence the design from the beginning.

When I start planning a website, I want to understand what the owner is trying to achieve. A business seeking investors needs a different experience from one building a wholesale network. A company with more inquiries than it can manage may need better qualification and follow-through. A new business may need to establish credibility and learn which offer attracts serious interest.

Each goal gives the website a different job. For an investor, that might mean a clear explanation of the business model and a route to request further information. For a trade customer, it might mean an application that collects the details needed to assess an account. For a service business, it could mean helping someone describe their project before a meeting.

Useful information remains essential. Customers need to understand what you do and why they should trust you. The opportunity is to connect that understanding to an action that moves the relationship forward. Every important page should have a purpose within that journey.

AI can support some of this work when it has a defined task and access to appropriate knowledge. An assistant might help a visitor explore a complex service or prepare a brief for your team. Its responses need evaluation against real questions, and a person needs to handle situations beyond its remit. A straightforward form or calculation may be the most effective solution for other tasks.

My approach is to establish the outcome first, then decide which combination of design, content and technology can support it. That keeps development tied to the business and gives us a reason to review what happens after launch.

Think about the next goal you want your business to reach. Where does the journey become slow, confusing or dependent on you repeating the same explanation? That is a useful place to begin imagining your website’s next role.

What more could your website do to help you reach that goal? Send me your website address and the outcome you have in mind, and we can explore where to begin.
