Smart strategic planning turns a plan into action
Who will do the work, with which resources, and how will you assess progress?
A business plan becomes more useful when the people responsible for delivery can connect it to their next decisions. They need to understand what matters first, which resources are available and what progress should look like. Strategic planning turns that direction into work people can carry forward.
Begin with the outcome the business needs. It might be launching a service, establishing a route to market or preparing operations for growth. Describe the result clearly enough that the team can recognize whether it has been achieved.
Then choose the initiatives that can contribute to that result. Each proposal competes for time, funding and attention. Consider the dependencies before committing to a sequence. A campaign may need a clear offer and a functioning inquiry process before additional spending can be put to good use.
BDC’s strategic-planning guidance connects the plan to an action plan with responsibilities, timelines and measures. That provides a useful structure for assigning the work and reviewing it with the people who will actually deliver it.

For each priority, name the person responsible and identify the contribution required from others. Record the resources committed and the decisions that still need approval. A project can appear ready in a presentation while depending on information or capacity that has not yet been secured.
Agree on review points that suit the work. Some activities produce useful evidence quickly; others need time before the result can be assessed. Review the observations alongside the original assumptions, and decide whether to continue, adjust the approach or change the sequence.
If the plan supports a funding request, show how the proposed resources relate to the work being described. When the funding position changes, revisit the implementation scope. The team needs a plan it can deliver with the resources actually available.
I develop business and marketing plans with this connection to execution in mind. The aim is to give your team a clear explanation of the business and a practical basis for deciding what happens next. If your existing plan is difficult to act on, we can review where the responsibilities, resources or priorities need to become clearer.
