WEBSITE FIELD NOTES / 3 MIN READ

Is your website driving upside?

Is it creating qualified opportunities, supporting sales or reducing repetitive work?

What useful change should your website produce for the business? That is the question I want answered before we decide how to improve it. The answer might involve sales, but it could also be a better investor conversation, more suitable inquiries or less administration for your team.

A service business might want more requests from customers it can actually help. A wholesaler might want existing accounts to reorder more easily. A company raising capital might need interested investors to understand its model and request a meeting. Each of these goals calls for a different journey and a different way of assessing progress.

Start by identifying the action that signals useful intent. Google Analytics allows businesses to mark important recorded actions as key events. That can help measure steps such as a completed inquiry. To understand commercial value, we also need to follow what happens afterwards: whether the inquiry was suitable, whether a conversation took place and whether it became work.

Imagine a website producing fewer inquiries after a change, while a greater share are relevant to the business. If the team spends less time handling unsuitable requests and has more productive conversations, the new experience may be helping. Looking at form totals alone would miss that possibility. The example also shows why we need to agree on what a qualified inquiry means.

There can be value within the existing customer relationship too. A clear ordering process may help customers complete routine purchases themselves. A resource area may give them access to documents they previously requested by email. We should measure the work involved before and after the change, including the effort required to keep the website’s information accurate.

A useful review compares the result with a starting point and considers what else changed. Advertising, seasonality, pricing and the sales team’s activity can all affect outcomes. Where practical, testing a change with comparable groups helps us understand its contribution. With limited traffic, we may need a longer observation period and closer attention to customer feedback.

The investment also needs to make sense. Development, software subscriptions and ongoing management belong in the calculation alongside the potential benefit. More activity on the site creates value when it contributes to a result the business can use.

What would make your website a better investment? Tell me which result matters most and how you assess it today. We can use that as the starting point for a focused improvement.
