CRAVE GENIUS FIELD NOTES

A clear brief reduces creative effort

Have you given the creative work a clear job to do?

Before commissioning another asset, describe what it needs to help someone understand or do. A clear purpose gives the creative work direction and gives your team a useful basis for reviewing it.

Begin with the audience and the situation. A person seeing a billboard has a different opportunity to engage from someone reading a presentation. Explain where the asset will appear, what the audience already knows and what you want them to take from it.

Then identify the main message. A brief can contain a great deal of business information, but the finished asset still needs an order of importance. Decide which point deserves attention first and which details support it. If everything is presented as equally important, the designer has to resolve that decision on your behalf.

Gather the materials that can be used. Current brand guidelines, approved copy, product information and existing photography help establish the starting point. Mark anything that needs checking rather than allowing an old figure or draft claim to become part of the finished work.

Include the practical requirements. Dimensions, placement, file formats and deadlines affect production. If the campaign needs several versions, identify them at the beginning. Planning the set together can make it easier to keep the message and visual treatment consistent.

The approval process belongs in the brief too. Name the decision-maker and the people who need to check specialist details. Collect feedback around the purpose of the asset so a review can resolve the work rather than introduce unrelated preferences one at a time.

My creative production is hands-on. AI is limited to supporting data work; I develop the creative assets myself. A useful brief gives that work a dependable foundation and helps us spend the effort on the decisions that matter.

If you are unsure what to request, start with the business goal and the place the message needs to appear. We can define the asset, identify what you already have and estimate the production work from there.
